2010 Ford Mustang Upholds Reputation

When Ford unleashed the first Mustang, back in 1964, they had no idea that the new pony car would become an American icon. But it sure has, and in a big way. Young and old alike have an appreciation for the Ford Mustang, through every generation in which the car has been offered. Newly designed inside and out, the 2010 Ford Mustang is no different. This vehicle aims to please, and it does just that.

If you have been longing for a sporty car that won’t break the bank, the new Mustang will fill the bill. You can get into this car for about $21,000, featuring 210 horsepower, with a standard 4.0 liter V-6 engine. If you have the money to invest, there are options that can put you closer to the $28,000 range, for a Mustang GT or, for those with money to burn, a $46,000 option will give you all the speed you need in a 5.4L Supercharged V-8 Engine.

Your biggest decision will be choosing between the two body styles being offered, either a fastback or a convertible. Both start at around $26,000. No matter what you envision, there’s a color for every taste. Choose from torch red, sunset gold, or even kona blue metallic. The interiors have been redesigned and updated. Although nice, they could have been improved still more by using a little less plastic.

To keep down the expense of owning a sports car like this, it’s important to pay attention to your auto insurance rates. Sports car insurance rates tend to be higher and, if you are young or have tickets on your record, this could be something you can’t fit into your budget. Comparing car insurance companies is the most effective way to get a good deal on rates.
Gather several quotes for comparable coverage, compare what is offered with each company, and go with one you can best afford. But don’t get too comfortable; you should compare rates at least a couple of times per year to ensure you are getting the best deal. Many factors go into determining rates; even things like auto roadside assistance being included can make one company’s offer better than the others.

Audi A5 £23,325 - £39,595

Another month, another Audi. The Ingolstadt factory is busier than ever right now, belching out new models as fast as its conveyor belts can carry them. Audi sold over a million cars last year, and this A5 Sportback is the 33rd car to join the company's line-up. It's also the sixth to share the A4/A5 platform.

So what is the A5 Sportback, exactly? We will attempt to answer that as briefly as possible, but because it's complicated, it might take nearly a billion words.

Firstly, ignore the name because essentially what we have here is the first-ever A4 hatchback (the A4 has always been a saloon or estate until now). Audi will recoil in mock-shock at that allegation, and insist this is a blood member of the A5 coupe family. But there's no escaping the two extra doors at the back, and especially the third one hinged to the roof.

Confused? Not yet, you're not. Is it the swoopy roofline that messes things up, making this a hatch that dabbles in coupe-ness? Or is it a coupe that dabbles in hatch-ness? Or is it neither, as Audi might claim, because it thinks it's an entirely new type of car? If you disregard the hatch's shutline or just squint a little, it could be an A5 saloon, or, in other words, a lower, swoopier A4 saloon. Maybe the A5 saloon is coming next.

Let's keep ploughing on through this, because at some point we'll get to the answer.

Mechanically the A5 Sportback shares almost everything with the A4, on which the A5 coupe is based. The wheelbase is just 2mm longer than an A4, though overall it's a tad shorter and a touch wider - as if God has reached down from heaven and gently squashed the car.

Visually, it's obviously more A5 than A4. It shares the same nose, the rippled waistline, the flicky bootlip and has a similar rear end. It has the classy frameless doors, too. But despite its complicated conception, the look is cohesive rather than confused - though it takes a few glances to fathom what you're looking at, which is a hatchback A4 with an A5 coupe nose. Maybe.

If you think we're going round in circles, you're probably right. But this is Audi, so it has built this A4 Hatchback and called it an A5 Sportback for a reason.

Scan any office car park and you'll see neat lines of saloons and estates, bookended by a slinky coupe in a spot marked ‘reserved'. It's the most obvious of status symbols - something swoopy for the boss, something ubiquitous and boxy for the underlings. Many company car lists restrict lowly staff to a four-door layout, leaving them wallowing in a saloon while the MD swoons around in his coupe. The Sportback fits somewhere between the two and gives middle managers a way around the rules. "An A4? Huh! No way, mine's a Sportback..."

Audi will tell you that the car is made for people who care greatly about design. And perhaps they do, but the fact that 70 per cent of sales will go down the fleet route suggests that, for most Sportback drivers, status is more important than style.

Is this starting to make sense? If it is, then think again, because we haven't stepped inside yet.

Appropriately, we'll start in the back. Swing open a rear door, plonk yourself inside and all seems pretty normal. Legroom is the same as the A4 saloon and headroom is compromised by just 5mm, which isn't a bad payoff for that sloping roofline. But look closer and you'll notice the lack of a middle seatbelt. Audi is selling this thing as a four-seater, which would be fine if the rear seats were artistically sculpted to cuddle your torso. But they're not. It's just a regular bench with a raised cushion where the middle seat would usually be. In other words, it's an incredibly lazy attempt to imitate a four-seat coupe, at the expense of practicality. Who will it impress?

Moving rearwards, the Sportback starts to make more sense. Despite the new arty silhouette the boot has a wide and unobstructed aperture through which to load your stuff. At 480 litres, luggage space is exactly the same as the A4 saloon, only more accessible as the hatch opens its big, yawning mouth.

At this point, you're probably wondering how it drives. Surely it will be like any other Audi, right?

Wrong. Somehow in the transition from coupe/saloon/whatever to Sportback, things have gone a bit soft. There's more body roll than in the A4/A5 and a floaty feeling on motorways, which on our test route, were as smooth as boiled sweets. Our car was on 17-inch wheels and standard suspension, which might account for some of the squidge - S-line cars did feel firmer. Audi reckons the spring and damper rates are identical to the coupe, but it doesn't feel like it.

That isn't necessarily a criticism though, as the entire Sportback experience was curiously relaxing. Best to forget Audi's claims of ‘extreme driving pleasure' and treat it more like a GT with which to hoover up motorways.

So now it's a GT too? Possibly.

The engines and gearboxes are more predictable. We spent most of our time in the 2.0-litre TDI, which was as strong and refined as ever. We also tried the 2.0-litre petrol, and that was smooth and quiet enough to put you off diesel for life, especially if you don't notch up huge motorway miles. But then it wouldn't be a GT, would it?

And while all that swirls around your brain like leaves in a vortex, consider this final twist. Spec-for-spec, the Sportback is more expensive than the A4 saloon - £1,700 in the case of a 2.0-litre TDI SE. Remember, what we're dealing with here is an A4 hatch (possibly), so a £1,700 premium over an equally-optioned saloon is madness. All you're getting is a swoopier C-pillar, more accessible bootspace and one fewer seat.

Compare that to, say, a Vauxhall Insignia - which carries no extra charge for the saloon-to-hatch transition - and the Sportback looks like a bit of a swindle.

And so we arrive at an answer, of sorts. The Sportback is an A4 hatch with the looks of an A5 and a ludicrously absent fifth seat. It's a comfy GT with usefully accessible bootspace. It won't satisfy your inner Stigness and it's far too expensive. And because it's an Audi, it will sell by the lorry load.

If that doesn't make sense now, it probably never will.

Bleu is the colour

If the standard, boring, 1001bhp, open-top Veyron Grand Sport is just too commonplace for your exacting standards, how about a one-off Grand Sport Sang Bleu?

Bugatti unveiled this special edition convertible Veyron at Pebble Beach over the weekend. As the Sang Noir special edition Veyron featured a black-on-black livery, so the Sang Bleu – yep, it means ‘blue blood’ in French – is decked out in blue carbon fibre and polished aluminium.

Mechanically, the Sang Bleu identical to the standard Veyron Grand Sport – though it’s tough to argue with a thousand-bhp 8.0-litre W16 engine and a 0-60mph time comfortably under three seconds.

So, yeah, we’ll take one, please. Ta. But we can’t helping wondering whether Bugatti is slightly confusing the term ‘special edition’ with the term ‘paintjob’. Gorgeous as the Sang Bleu is, can they keep claiming another special edition each time they paint a Veyron in a new colour?

Maybe this is how to add value to your knackered old Vauxhall Nova come resale time. Paint the bonnet and roof in some improbable shade of fluorescent yellow – to contrast nicely with the beige doors – call it the Nova Coeur Jaune and add £500 to the part-ex value. Another recession-busting Top Gear Top Tip there…

Vauxhall Insignia

Four, wheel and drive. Those three little words are what save the new Vauxhall Insignia VXR, for the simple reason that they banish all thoughts of the torque-steering monstrosity that was the Vectra VXR to the dark recesses of your mind.

Because despite producing 321bhp and 321lb ft from a 2.8-litre V6 turbo, the Insignia VXR doesn't suffer from any sort of torque steer at all. Those three words also sum up neatly the attitude shift of VXR - gone is the chav factor, replaced here by something more civilised. Less Burberry cap, more company rep with tie at a jaunty angle.

‘Useable performance' is the buzz phrase now, even ‘subtle' styling. Thank goodness for that, as VXR was in danger of becoming an antiquated performance brand only four years after it launched.

Step into this Insignia VXR and there are still performance brand touches, but it's a classier place to be and less in-your-face. The seats are Recaro and illustrate this best - yes, they're racing seats, all-in-one things with no separate head-rest, but they're comfortable not just supportive. Long journeys won't be a problem in this car. The gearstick no longer has the rough stitching on it. The dials are more subdued. It's all improved.

The same goes for driving. The first thing that strikes you about it is how well it rides. The car we drove came on enormous 20-inch alloys, which look fantastic if a bit big on the Insignia, and the tyres are seriously low-profile. It also has stiffer suspension all round and the whole car is 10mm lower. But drive through town and you don't feel like you're about to compress your spine by three inches. It's firm, of course, but there's exceptional compliance here. Drive through a pot-hole and it doesn't crash, it doesn't shake the whole car. Even at higher speeds you don't have to fight it too much to keep it on the black stuff because the car doesn't fidget over bumps, in normal mode at least.

There are two ‘sport' buttons on the VXR, one marked ‘Sport' and the other ‘VXR'. Hmmm. Their originality knows no bounds. The former just tightens the damping, but press the latter and you get stiffer suspension, more direct steering and a sharper throttle. Oh, and the dials turn a shade of dark red.

This button is a throwback to the Vectra VXR, as if the ghost of that car can't quite be banished. It doesn't make the car any faster, doesn't release any more power, it just makes the Insignia feel skittish and over the top. If it suddenly turned the car into a fun performance hatch, I could understand. But all it does is remove any finesse from the package. Take the throttle for instance. In VXR mode, it's far too sharp, so that when you're mid-corner and a bump makes your foot nudge the accelerator, you get an annoying squirt of power from the engine. It's jerky and not what you want. Smooth driving is tricky with that VXR button lit.

The engine has its contradictions as well. It's quick (0-60mph in 5.6 seconds), smooth (far silkier than the Vectra's old four-pot) and very responsive over 2,500rpm. Sixth gear isn't massively long so you can sit in that cog quite happily over B-roads without having to change down all the time.

But, there's an annoying exhaust boom at about 2,000rpm that makes longer journeys more tiring than they need be. In the old Vectra VXR, you would have accepted that as part of the in-yer-face attitude of the thing. But it doesn't suit the character of this new car - it just feels weird. Fine to make it sound loud when you really rev it, but this car will do a lot of motorway miles and for that any sort of boom is bad. The irony is that the noisiest revs equate to 70mph in sixth - only at 85mph do they disappear.

This is a pity because grip levels and lack of body roll are seriously impressive on the VXR. Turn in and there's absolutely no hesitation, it just fires you around the corner. As part of the VXR tweaks to the Insignia, Vauxhall has fitted a limited slip rear differential. Doubtless this might make a difference on the track, but I never got to a circuit and I certainly couldn't feel anything noticeable on the road.

The steering doesn't help either. It's too light and over-assisted. Lightness isn't necessarily a problem if there's feedback there too, but that's not the case here. The Insignia feels like Vauxhall has bolted too big an electric motor to the steering rack so you don't get any sense of adjustability. Minute changes at the wheel don't bring minute front-wheel changes. Fine for your motorway cruise, but not so good for the B-road. Other cars make that compromise better.This illustrates the biggest problem with the Insignia VXR. On the one hand, it's far, far better than the Vectra and on most levels is a good car. It also has this sector pretty much to itself - an Audi S4 is only about £4,000 more, but Audis and Vauxhalls rarely mix. Though their performance is similar, badge snobs will still steer away from Vauxhall.

The plus points don't stop there. The Insignia does what most people require of it perfectly acceptably, like the motorway cruise, and the B-road blast. The problem is that it doesn't excel at either. It doesn't seem entirely happy in its own skin.

Renault Kangoo

Nice gearchange on the Kangoo. Not a feature likely to be top of the average van-MPV buyer's checklist, but a fine six-speed it is: smooth, snicky and precise.

In fact, the all-new Renault Kangoo is decent to drive. Obviously you can't negate the brute physics of a giant, slab-sided van - plunge into a corner and it'll list like a flimsy sailboat in a storm - but the steering is surprisingly direct and the ride firm and composed. That's because the new Kangoo shares its underpinnings with the new Scenic, not the commercial van platform of its predecessor. So it drives like a car - a big, tall, heavy car, admittedly - and the range-topping 106bhp diesel is just quick enough to keep up with traffic. At least until you load it up with trombones, Borzois and enormous wheels of cheese.

Because, decent gearbox or not, the Kangoo is still all about storage, load-lugging, and it still does it better than just about anything else out there. It's absolutely cavernous - a full 18cm longer and 10cm wider than the old, definitely-not-small Kangoo - with nearly 3,000 litres of load space. It's packed with all the useful stuff so conspicuously lacking from the Citroen Nemo: fold-flat seats, underfloor storage bins and lots of cubbyholes, some large enough to fit small humans in. Not revolutionary stuff, but immaculately executed.

Nemo and Qubo, take note: this is how to do a van conversation. And a gearbox.

Lexus SC 430 £52,759

Comfort

One of the most unsubtle rides in the world of the car. For a big CC cruiser, you'd think the SC430 would be a world of calm, but it punches every pothole with a vengeance. The engine and gearbox themselves are near silent - it's just that the suspension and tyres feel broken.

You can't really hear it, but the SC430's 4.3-litre V8 and five-speed auto are tremendously refined and quite quick; 0-62mph in just 6.2 seconds and a limited 155mph top speed. You just never feel like making use of it.

You might think that you're thinking outside the box and being a bit eccentric when buying an SC430. Anyone who knows anything about cars will just think you're a twat who knows nothing about cars.

Thankfully the SC430 does carry through the tradition of having a supremely well-built interior - it might sometimes look a bit plastic (that's perceived quality in Japan, apparently), but in terms of how it's screwed together, the finish is peerless.

Hmmm, given that Lexus usually excels at making cars ride and handle, or at least ride, the SC430 is surprisingly wobbly when going fast. The steering expired some time ago and there's precious little feel. It encourages precisely nothing. Bit of a bugger when the Mercedes SL is the competition.

Practicality

No room in the back and a tiny boot (138litres) that all but disappears when the roof is stowed. There's room up front, but as it's such a bulbous-looking blob, you'd have thought there might be a few more litres of space in it.

If you really did go and do this as a company car you'd be 35-percent liable thanks to 24.8mpg and group 19 insurance. Residuals are pure financial suicide.

Toyota iQ £8,872 - £11,837

Comfort

Ok, so this is a small car, but the attendant tiny terror worries are unusually absent. The wheel-at-each-corner Toyota ‘Super-stance' helps with the ride quality and handling, but on the motorway the iQ feels like a much bigger car. Then you realise that you can reach the back window from the front seat. Neat. It rides well, and seating for three is bizarrely spacious for three in a car that is under 3m long. The fourth seat is for small people or kids only, but for getting across town with friends, there's nothing quite like it.

Performance

There's only one engine choice and that's a lovely little 1.0-litre triple with 67bhp and 67lb ft of torque. Sounds weak, in reality it really works. Top speed is just under the ton and 0-62mph is 14.7 seconds - and for such a small car it actually feels pretty sprightly - it'll hold 80mph on the m-way easily too.

At the moment the iQ is just glorious. Everyone wants a small rational car, and the iQ isn't a retro homage or a pastiche. Modern, quirky and just a little bit special.

The one thing where the iQ isn't totally on the pace. The early cars have shoddy, cheap plastics on the interiors that really jar with the premium feel of the rest of the car. There is no doubt at all over the quality of the grubby bits, but why, oh why couldn't they spend more than 7p on the door cards?

Toyota's packaging solutions push the wheels out into the corners just like the original Mini - and we all know how well that went around corners. The iQ isn't quite in that league - but it's more fun than you think. One of the reasons is that the iQ is as wide as a Ford Focus (even though it measures in at under 3m) and so the plan view is essentially square. Towns become playgrounds.

Practicality

Another superb coup from the iQ here. As a city car it simply cannot be beaten. When you don't need the rear seats you can fold them over to form a bigger boot. Not massive, but definitely useful. And then when you need to furtle around with friends and still park, you can do all that too. Interestingly, there are lots of places in Europe where cars under 3m have special parking spots where they are designed to park front/back on to the kerb; the iQ is the only four-seat car that can do it.

Running costs

A tiny triple will easily get 65-odd mpg. On test, with hard driving, the car returned nearly 60 - which is very good. Insurance is cheap and the car will be very reliable if Toyota's reputation is anything to go by. The only slight fly in the ointment is the high initial purchase price; the iQ starts at £9495 with the higher-spec ‘2' version a grand more.

Peugeot gets the hump

Your eyes do not deceive you. This is a Peugeot and it is exciting.

This is the Peugeot RCZ , the production version of the Audi TT -rivalling concept we saw a couple of summers ago. But now it is real and reaching a road near you early next year.

Not a bad looking thing, is it? Most excellently, the ‘double bubble’ roof of the concept has remained – Peugeot says it improves aero flow over the top of the car – along with those fat flared arches and aluminium roof strips.

Though based on 308 underpinnings, the RCZ is a two-door, 2+2 coupe with more focus on driving dynamics than anything in the current Peugeot range.

The ride height is 20mm lower than the 308, while the front and rear tracks have been widened by 54mm and 72mm respectively.

Peugeot says it has dropped its standard numeric naming convention for the RCZ because the car is so damn special. It’ll be built in ‘small volumes’ at Magna Steyr’s Austrian factory, so quality should be high.

If you’re expecting TTRS-matching pace from the RCZ, you’re being a bit ambitious. Three engines will be available at launch, with a 200bhp 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine (a powered-up version of the unit in the Mini Cooper S) topping the range.

It’ll hustle the RCZ to 62mph in 7.6 seconds while returning 39.8mpg and under 165g/km of CO2. A detuned version of the same engine – developing 156bhp – and a 163bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel are also on the menu, the latter returning over 50mpg and just under 140g/km of CO2.

There’s a decent bit of bootspace, too – 384 litres, to be precise – and the rear seats (which Peugeot admits are strictly ‘occasional’) can be folded down to increase luggage capacity.

We’ll see the RCZ in the metal – and buttock-aping glass – at the Frankfurt motorshow, before it goes on sale in the UK next spring. Let’s hear your thoughts

Lexus's 1-Series sketched out

We have, on rare occasion, been known to moan about cryptic ‘teaser sketches’ and their ilk.

When they look like bird-irons , we feel our whinging is justified. When, however, they look like this – the Lexus CT concept set to debut at the Frankfurt motorshow – we’ll happily swallow our pride and admit we’re a bit excited.

The CT concept previews Lexus’s upcoming BMW 1-Series rival, a small hatch set to slot below the IS in the luxury brand’s line-up.

At this stage, details remain, er, sketchy, but it is rumoured the CT – if indeed that name carries over to the production car – will, despite its diminutive size, gain the option of a hybrid drivetrain and other green technologies.

What can we tell from the sketch? Not a whole heap, in truth, as the journey from notepaper to forecourt is notoriously rocky. That front end seems to be inspired by the IS-F, while those slabby sides indicate the CT could have similar proportions to the 1-Series hatch.

We’d expect to see the CT concept in the metal (or whatever it is they use to make show concepts – plasticine?) in Frankfurt next month. Stay tuned for more news, folks.

Boom boom boom boom

There are too few cars named after late 1990s Dutch Europop acts. Aiming to rectify this shortfall comes the Kia Venga, a mini-MPV from the Korean manufacturer that promises Focus space within a Fiesta footprint.

Marketing spiel perhaps, but the Venga – which shares its underpinnings with the Soul and Hyundai i20 – should be a practical wee thing, with a roofline some 13 centimetres higher than the Fiesta (and 11cm higher than the i20) providing extra interior space.

As you’ve probably guessed, it won’t challenge the Clio 200 for the hot hatch crown. It’ll be launched with 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines developing between 74bhp and 113bhp, though all models will get start-stop technology.

A hybrid version is rumoured to join the line-up later next year.

“This is exactly the kind of vehicle UK motorists are looking for as we emerge from the recent economic turmoil,” says Kia MD Michael Cole.

“A fantastically flexible package providing big-car comfort and space within a compact package, it will offer our customers style, sophistication and refinement coupled with environmental economy.”

Rumours that the Venga will be unveiled at the Frankfurt show by the eponymous Arsenal manager are completely unfounded.

New Camaro 2009

What was originally the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro will now debut in the first quarter of 2009 as a 2010 model. The 2010 version shares some of its basic design with the Pontiac G8.
Camaro comes in three trim levels: LS, LT, and high-performance SS. Two engines are available - a V6 and a V8. The V6 is a 3.6-liter unit that produces 300 hp. It’s available on LS and LT.
SS versions with a manual transmission get a 422-hp 6.2-liter V8.

Tramontana Sports Car

A relatively unknown Spanish company called Tramontana has developed a monster. They took a Mercedes-sourced twin-turbo 5.5-liter V12 producing 720 horsepower and placed it in a completely carbon fiber chassis, then covered it in a body made completely from carbon fiber.

Top speed: 201 mph.

There will only be 12 of these made per year, and expect to pay a rather hefty sum of about $500,000 each.

VW Chico Efficient Green Car

The three-door hatchback is set to compete with the Smart and Toyota iQ.
It could cost as little as $9,000 when it goes on sale in the UK in 2011.

Lexus Announces Prices For New LS 600h

The LS 600h, the new hybrid power flagship of the Lexus brand, will cost from £81,400 when the model goes on sale in the UK on 1 October. Equipped with a more advanced powertrain and more sophisticated array of preventive, active and passive features than any car in its class, the LS 600h will set new standards in luxury motoring. A superb specification will ensure owners enjoy supreme comfort, convenience and on-board entertainment.

The LS 600h features the world’s first full-time, all-wheel drive full hybrid V8 powertrain, combining a technically peerless 5.0-litre engine with a powerful, high-output motor. The result is performance that rivals a standard V12 petrol engine (nought to 62mph in 6.3 seconds) with fuel consumption and emissions that are on a par with the segment’s best performing – and substantially lower powered – diesels (30.4mpg and 219g/km in combined cycle driving). Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is enjoying another high in the success story of its 911: a little over three years since production started in April 2004, the 100,000th vehicle in the current Eleven series (Type 997) has rolled off the production line at the company’s main plant in Zuffenhausen.

Porsche has been manufacturing the 911 since 1963, but never in all that time have so many of these sports cars been produced so quickly as with the sixth generation. The “record” Eleven, a guards red Carrera S with manual gearbox, is to be delivered to a customer in the Frankfurt/Main area within the next few days.

Over the past 40 years or so, the 911 has become the quintessential sports car. From fall 2007, a total of 16 different Eleven models will leave the production line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen alongside the newly unveiled 911 Turbo Cabriolet and the racing derivatives, the 911 GT3 Cup and the 911 GT3 RSR. By July 31, the end of the 2006/2007 fiscal year, Porsche will have placed around 36,000 units from the 911 series on the global market – yet another record in the history of the Eleven.

The GM Daewoo Matiz mini-car has won the Energy Grand Prix award presented by Consumers Korea. Founded in 1983, Consumers Korea is a non-profit organization that helps protect the interests of local consumers.

Since 1997, it has annually presented the Energy Winner Awards, honoring products and organizations that contribute to the saving of energy. The three most energy-efficient products and activities are honored with the Energy Grand Prix award.

During this year’s 11th Energy Winner Awards, winners were selected in five categories: Green Equipment, Green Lighting, Green Building/Architecture, Energy-Efficient Vehicle and Energy-Saving Activity. GM Daewoo was presented its award during an official ceremony today

The Lexus Symphony Orchestra

Lexus has created the world’s first classical music ensemble composed entirely of cars. The Lexus Symphony Orchestra, a group of 12 LS 460 limousines, will perform for the first time this summer at two major open air concerts, presenting a programme of popular classics and original works.

The orchestra has been created by Lexus GB to demonstrate the quality of the LS 460’s sound system, designed specially for the car by international audio specialist Mark Levinson. With an array of 19 custom-engineered speakers and a 15-channel 450-watt amplifier, it gives ‘reference’ sound reproduction that matches the results from a professional music studio monitoring desk.

To reveal this quality to a larger audience, Lexus brought together the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Choir in a recording session with conductor Alastair King at Sir George Martin’s world-famous AIR Studios in London. The musicians performed the celebrated classical pieces Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel and Satie’s Gymnopédie No1, and two new commissions written specially for the Lexus auto-orchestra: Summon the Hero and Karma Nirvana, composed by Chesney Hawkes and Chris Nicolaides and orchestrated by Alastair King.

The results will be presented for the first time at the Proms Spectacular at Castle Howard on 18 and 19 August and at the Last Night of the Summer Proms at Crystal Palace Park on 25 and 26 August.

Kia Motors Corporation has released the first preview image of its exciting new Kia three-door hatchback model which will make its World Premiere at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show on 11 September.

The new model will be named Pro-cee’d. Based closely on the earlier ‘pro_cee’d’ concept shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2006, the new production model has been developed by Kia’s design team in Europe under the direction of Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.

“Longer, lower and lighter than its five-door sister car, the new Kia Pro-cee’d is going to be a great drive,” enthused Mr Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe. “Combining real style and genuine practicality, our new three-door cee’d is sure to delight existing Kia customers and attract a new group of European consumers who have not yet considered our brand.”

Manufactured in Slovakia, Pro-cee’d will be the third member of the Kia cee’d family, joining the popular cee’d five-door and the soon to be released cee’d SW models to make Kia an especially strong challenger for C-segment sales in Europe.

The Roush Roadster is a custom painted, two-toned cruiser intended for those who want to drop the top, feel the wind blowing through their hair, and watch the world as they cruise by. 2007 Aston Martin Vanquish S V12

The fastest production model ever to be built by Aston Martin made its world debut at the 2004 Paris Motor Show.

With a maximum speed in excess of 200 mph (321 km/h) and a 6.0 liter V12 engine developing 520 horsepower, the Vanquish S has been designed to deliver even greater performance , complemented by subtle suspension and steering changes and a number of interior and external style revisions.

The Vanquish S has received subtle but effective changes to complement its elegant muscular body. The famous Aston Martin grille has a new rounded and more open appearance for better cooling, and an aerodynamic splitter improves high-speed stability.

At the rear, a redesigned boot lid featuring a new high mounted stop lamp reduces lift and improves balance and stability, helping to achieve an impressive Cd figure of 0.32.

These differences on the Vanquish S not only improve the appearance but also enhance performance. All the exterior body panels are constructed from aluminum with each individual panel hand tailored to the central structure to ensure a perfect panel fit. Every carefully detailed feature provides graphic evidence of the painstaking craftsmanship and quality, which is invested in its construction at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell site in Buckinghamshire.

Revised steering geometry provides a 20% quicker response, allowing the driver to apply a reduced input for required steering response. This enables the driver to be more precise with inputs - especially on winding roads - and more accurate feedback from the chassis.

The Sports Dynamics suspension, steering and braking package is now standard on the Vanquish S. This includes stiffer springs and dampers and shorter steering arms.

Further development of Aston Martin’s low emissions, all alloy, quad-overhead camshaft, 48 valve, 6.0-liter V12 engine has generated an increase in power from 460 bhp to 520 bhp at 7000 rpm and torque is boosted to 425 lb-ft at 5800 rpm.

The overall interior design is a subtle blend of traditional, classic and modern materials with Bridge of Weir leather upholstery matched to contemporary metal interior fittings and finishes. New Volvo S40 And V50 Sportswagon

Volvo’s two best-selling models in 2006, the S40 saloon and V50 Sportswagon, have been given a comprehensive external and internal redesign to enhance their dynamism, versatility and safety even further, while visually drawing both models closer to Volvo’s all-new S (saloon) and V (estate) styling. With effect from 2008 Volvo model year, production starts in May and first customer cars will arrive in the UK in early July.

Design

Taking a step closer to the all-new Volvo S80 saloon design cues, the Volvo S40 now features a reprofiled nose and chrome framed ‘egg-crate’ grille, complete with a 50 per cent larger Volvo badge – a clear indication of Volvo’s bolder future design direction.

This distinctive front is flanked by new clear-lensed headlamp units, while a striking full-width air intake, incorporating reworked integral fog lamps and a central mesh section, replaces the previous three-part air intake unit.

At the rear, the S40’s new tail light units – fitted with LED light emitting diode brake lights – are now smaller, with new graphics, and sit 30 mm higher than previously. A new bumper and revised boot handle design as well as a more sporting exhaust pipe layout complete the visual makeover.

Just as the S40 draws inspiration from the all-new S80, the V50 Sportswagon moves closer to the all-new Volvo V70 estate, with a sportier new grille and headlamp layout and distinctive three-part front air intake. And, like the S40, the Sportswagon features Volvo’s deep-set chrome-collared grille and larger Volvo badge.

The V50’s distinctive rear styling now benefits from slimmer tail light units that are equipped with LED brake lights, enhancing the car’s shoulders. A new boot handle, restyled bumper and a revised pair of exhaust pipes complete the look.

Restyled lower door mouldings and side sills also underline the visual changes between old and new saloon and Sportswagon models.

Versatility and Packaging

Volvo designers and engineers also gave the cabins of the S40 and V50 a thorough revision to add more storage space and carrying versatility as well as boosting the choice of interior trims.

Volvo’s iconic ‘floating’ centre stack has revised controls and is complemented by a multi-function centre tunnel storage area, a more compact handbrake design, and a revised armrest that’s longer and further forward for greater driver comfort. It can also flip through 180 degrees to act as a useful table for rear passengers.

As well as redesigned cupholders, there’s now a much larger storage area under the armrest, while the lower sections of the front door inside panels have been redesigned to accommodate larger items. The auxiliary input for the audio system has been repositioned under the armrest and is now standard across the range, while a roll-top cover for the central storage area provides heightened security.

Other changes include more dynamically styled instrument panels for the T5 and D5 models, Dynaudio speakers for the Premium Sound system, a new hard drive-based RTI road traffic information and satellite navigation system and a redesigned remote key fob with Auto Open and Auto Close for all side windows and sunroof.

New trim options for the floating centre stack comprise a Nordic Light Oak real wood matt inlay and Virtual White, inspired by the modern glossy white surfaces in sporting equipment and computers. Drivers can also now opt for the new Spring Green upholstery and three new exterior colour options have been added too.

Safety

Introducing yet more safety features, the new Volvo S40 and V50 Sportswagon can be equipped with Active Bi-Xenon headlamps that swivel the light beam in continuous sync with steering direction.

Should any of the Volvo’s airbags be deployed, the hazard lights will now automatically be activated – a feature that helps attract the attention of other motorists in the event of a single-vehicle accident in the dark.

During emergency braking or when the anti-lock function is activated, the EBL Emergency Brake Lights function flashes all three brake lights five times a second to warn following drivers of the emergency braking manoeuvre.

ISOFIX points in the rear seats are now standard, as is water repellent glass2 on the front side windows for enhanced visibility in poor weather.

Dynamics

The new Volvo S40 and V50 also benefit from an enhanced powertrain offer. The D5 diesel engine will be available with a slick six-speed manual transmission. Because of its more robust nature, the transmission can handle the engine’s full 400 Nm of torque, compared to the 350 Nm of the automatic gearbox.

The transmission, which arrives later this year, will make the turbodiesel D5 not only the fastest diesel-powered Volvo to date but also one of the cleanest – the advanced powerplant will be fully compliant with anticipated stringent Euro V emission regulations.

Finally, the turbo-charged T5 model enjoys a 10 hp increase, taking total output to a full 230 bhp.

2007 Ruf CTR-3

Exactly 20 years after the original CTR, German tuning house RUF has announced the introduction of its third generation CTR3 coinciding with the launch of its new plant in Bahrain. The latest version will be one of the fastest Porsches on offer when it’s released.

RUF has utilized racing technologies first seen on its 911-based RT12 offering. Powering the CTR3 is a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat six engine pumping out 700 bhp at 7,000 rpm with torque topping out at 657 lb-ft. To save weight its developers added several unique body panels made from lightweight carbon-fiber as well as a new lattice tubing spaceframe.

Drive is sent to the wheels via a six-speed sequential manual gearbox that allows the CTR3 to hit 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 235 mph. Braking is done through 15-inch discs and 6-piston calipers front and rear. When the original CTR was released in 1987, it out-performed many of the supercars of its era including cars like the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Countach and even Porsche’s own 959. The CTR3 is set to do the same but won”t come cheap as pricing is expected to fall at just over $500,000.

“The Altima Coupe sets itself apart from the segment by being more than just an Altima Sedan minus two doors,” said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “The driving performance of the Altima Coupe is biased toward sporty feel, especially when equipped with our award- winning V6. Handling is also a strong point of the new Coupe, as is the responsive feeling provided by the Xtronic CVT transmission.”

The 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 utilized in Altima Coupe 3.5 SE models is the “next generation” version of the 12-time Ward’s “10 Best Engines” award- winning VQ-series V6. For use in the Altima Coupe, it is rated at 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Available with the new Altima Coupe 2.5 S models is a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve QR25 inline 4-cylinder, producing 175 horsepower (170 hp CAL) and 180 lb-ft of torque (175 lb-ft CAL).

Altima Coupe models with the 4-cylinder engine are equipped with 16-inch wheels and tires, while V6-equipped Altima Coupes come with unique-design 17- inch aluminum-alloy wheels and 215/55R17 tires. All 2008 Altima Coupes also come equipped with standard 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).

The list of Altima Coupe passenger amenities includes standard Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and available Bose(R)-developed audio system with nine speakers, Bluetooth(R) Hands-Free Phone System, satellite radio and dual-zone automatic temperature control.

Available technology features include a RearView Monitor, which utilizes a small camera to help show the view behind the vehicle when in reverse gear, and Nissan Navigation System with a 6.5-inch color monitor.

2007 Nissan 350Z Prices Announced

Nissan has announced the price of the new 350Z, with its uprated engine, to give a starting figure of £26,795 OTR for the Coupe and £28,295 OTR for the Roadster, representing an increase of only £300. This also includes the recently announced rise in road tax (up £90) and the first registration fee (up £12). Vehicle deliveries are expected to start from mid May.

Changes to the award winning 350Z include an 80% new engine which has meant, due to its taller stance, that the front bonnet has had to be discreetly redesigned with a slightly raised profile, giving it a look reminiscent of the original 240Z. There are also three new exterior colours on offer – Temper Orange, replacing Sunset, which contains a subtle green “flip” when seen in soft light conditions.

Twilight Grey and Night Blue complete the new shades replacing Gun Metal Grey and Azure Blue respectively. Solid Red, Universal Silver and Ebisu Black continue to remain available.

Inside, a new no cost option trim has been introduced called Frost. It has a pale grey tone and adds a touch of sophistication to the car’s interior. On the Roadster the frost trim can be ordered with a new grey coloured roof hood, also at no extra cost, replacing the previous availability of blue.

Keeping you safe on the road are anti-lock brakes with Switchable Electronic Stability Control, bi-xenon headlamps plus, should they be needed, front, side and curtain airbags.

The GT pack which is a further £2500 includes heated and electric powered leather sports seats, a 240W Bose radio / cassette 6 CD autochanger with 7 speakers including a 10” sub woofer and audio pilot noise compensation technology, and cruise control. Alezan orange interior is a further £400 and if you want Birdview Satellite navigation then add £1200.

The HR in the engine code stands for High Revolution and High Response designed to improve the overall acceleration, feel and sound of the unit. Power is increased by 13PS giving a total of 313PS at 6800rpm with a further 500rpm added to the top end of the rev range – now standing at 7500rpm.

However, the real difference will be noticed lower down with 90% of the 358Nm torque (up 5Nm) being achieved at just 2000rpm (maximum at 4800rpm). These changes allow performance figures to improve with 0.1 of a second shaved off the 0-62mph time which means the Coupe now takes 5.7 seconds and the roadster 6.1. And, there is no change to either the combined fuel consumption figure or the CO2 emissions; 24.1mpg and 280g/km respectively for the coupe and 23.5mpg and 288g/km for the Roadster.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Interior Goes Two-Tone

Chevrolet has announced that the redesigned 2008 Malibu sedan will be unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit .

This teaser interior shot released by the company showed an updated version of the GM brand’s classic dual-cockpit design.

Chevy said the photo showed one of the car’s available two-tone interiors.

“The 2008 Chevy Malibu will offer a number of striking and progressive interiors that use premium materials to demonstrate quality and value not seen before in this segment,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.

For ‘08, the front-wheel-drive Malibu will get a 6-inch-longer wheelbase than the current model and is expected to be equipped with either four- or six-cylinder engines. Styling is expected to be a bit bolder, with more angular cues patterned after those on the Chevrolet Tahoe.

“GM needs to have a strong presence in midsize cars once again,” GM North America President Troy Clarke told Detroit’s Automotive Press Association in a speech. “And this is the type of design that will lead us to be known as a great carmaker… not only as a great truck manufacturer that also happens to make cars…. That’s another key to improving our net sales.”

The new Malibu is expected to hit showrooms in mid-2007.

Japan Beat: 12th-Generation Nissan Skyline

Nissan has launched its new Skyline sedan in Japan, the 12th generation of the Japan-market equivalent of the Infiniti G35.

A company official, acknowledging that minicars are riding the crest of popularity right now in Japan, said he hopes “a new wave [of sales] comes” for sedans with the new model.

The Skyline gets two new Nissan V6 engines, a 3.5-liter that makes 315 horsepower and a 2.5-liter that makes 225 hp, each mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control. Sporty SP and P models have steering-column-mounted magnesium shift paddles that let the driver select a manual-shift mode. The SP and P models of the Skyline also have, as an option, “the world’s first four-wheel active steering system,” Nissan says.

The new Skyline is lower to the ground, slightly wider and has a sleek design described as “dynamic motion” by the company. There’s a new grille and headlamp design, as well as L-shaped taillights. Sport models of the new Skyline have their own front bumper and body-side sill spoiler.

Inside, there’s aluminum trim with a finish that, in true Nissan/Infiniti style, was “inspired by the texture of traditional Japanese rice paper called Washi,” and optional exotic-wood trim. Seats have been lowered by a little more than an inch for a sportier feeling for the driver.

2007 Volkswagen Passat R36 Sedan And Wagon

The Passat R36 will be available as a sedan or wagon. Either has a 300-horsepower version of the 3.6-liter narrow-angle six-cylinder, which is twenty more than it makes in the standard Passat 3.6.

The R36 comes standard with VW’s exclusive DSG twin-clutch transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive, and is available in the same Deep Blue Pearl paint that made its debut on the GTI-based R32.

The R36 receives an exterior makeover with R-specific bumpers, darkened LED taillights, bi-xenon headlights, a rear spoiler, matte-chrome exclusive front grille, chrome side accents, and body-colored side skirts and fender flares. R36-exclusive eighteen-inch “Omanyt” wheels carry 235/40-18 tires, and the rear end is punctuated with twin chrome exhaust tips.

Inside, the instrument cluster, now lit in white instead of blue and red, is visible through an R steering wheel, the shift lever is alumized, and the “Engine Spin” R logo is repeated on the aluminum pedals and front door thresholds. Heated sports seats are fitted all-around, with the fronts 12-way electrically adjustable.

With no mention of any suspension or brake upgrades, the R36 is more of an appearance package than anything. This comes as a bit of a surprise, since the R32 was such a thoroughly integrated package built upon the GTI.

New High-tech Engine In The Audi A6

A new ultra-modern V6 power unit with a displacement of 2.8 litres will be available for the Audi A6 and A6 Avant from 20 October 2006. The engine has an output of 154 kW (210 bhp) and achieves 280 Nm of torque, available constantly from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm.

As well as FSI petrol direct injection, the V6 thus for the first time features a highly efficient but astonishingly simple valve control technology – the innovative Audi valvelift system. What this means for Audi drivers is even more driving fun, on appreciably less fuel.

The new technology has the purpose of controlling valve lift variably in two stages. The Audi valvelift system implements so-called cam pieces, which are located on the inlet basic camshafts and can be displaced longitudinally. They carry two cam contours, side by side, for small and large valve travel. Depending on their position, the inlet valves are opened in accordance with the prevailing load requirements via roller cam followers.

In conjunction with an array of complementary measures that promote reduced friction at numerous components, the Audi valvelift system reduces fuel consumption by around ten percent. The 2.8-litre FSI, which has plenty in reserve in every situation thanks to its substantial torque and high output, will use only on average 8.7 litres of premium-grade petrol in the Audi A6. The A6 2.8 FSI accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.9 seconds and continues on rapidly to reach its top speed of 243 km/h.

The Audi A6 2.8 FSI will be available to customers from the end of November 2006. The starting price of the saloon with 6-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive will be 37,300 euros; the A6 Avant 2.8 FSI has a price tag of 39,500 euros (both incl. 16 percent VAT).

2007 BMW 3-Series Convertible Unveiled

BMW released initial details on the 2007 3-Series convertible, which will go on sale early next year. The car will make its debut at the Detroit auto show in January. Like its coupe counterpart, the cabriolet will be offered in both 328i and 335i editions in North America, and 325i and 335i guises in Europe. BMW says the 306 horsepower 335i model will reach 62 mph in 5.8 seconds.

The model now comes with a three-piece electronically-operated retractable hard-top - a first for BMW. Because the roof features a larger rear glass windscreen and side windows, visibility has improved by 38 per cent compared to the outgoing model.

The initial photography released by BMW does not show the new convertible with its top up. More images are expected this week.

2007 Audi Q7 Receives Five-Star Crash Test Ratings From NHTSA

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) this week gave the 2007 Audi Q7 their highest-possible ratings for front and side crash protection. The Audi Q7 received five-star ratings for driver and passenger protection in frontal crash tests, and five-star ratings for front and rear passenger protection in side impact crash tests. The Audi Q7 also received a roll-over rating of four- stars.

“Time and time again, Audi has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety,” said Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America, Inc. “We knew the Audi Q7 would be one of the safest SUVs available when we were developing it, and these test results confirm our position.”

The 2007 Audi Q7 comes standard with the latest safety features such as quattro(R) all-wheel drive, dual-front and front-side airbags, Sideguard(TM) head curtain air bags that protect all three rows of passengers, pre- tensioning three-point seatbelts for all passengers, LATCH child-seat anchoring system, ABS, and Electronic Stabilization Program with roll-over detection.

Audi Side Assist, which warns the driver of vehicles in their blind spot at speeds over 30 mph, and rear-side airbags for the second row are optional safety features. The 2007 Audi Q7 3.6 has a price of $39,900 before destination.

The New Toyota Auris

Toyota announced the first details of the Auris, a new core model in its range that will play a key role in advancing its brand ambitions in Europe. Auris, which is designed and built in Europe, will join Yaris and Avensis in spearheading the company’s progress towards its newly-announced target of 1.2 million annual sales in Europe by 2008.

Auris has been created to meet the changing demands of the crucial C-segment family hatchback market. It offers a dynamic design and striking features and delivers the well-established hallmark Toyota values of superior quality, innovation and driving pleasure.

In creating Auris, the designers worked from the inside out, an approach that maximises usable space in the cabin and ensures high levels of passenger comfort through elements such as a flat rear passenger floor and high window surfaces. Built on an all-new platform, Auris has an overall length of 4,220mm and a long, 2,600mm wheelbase, giving excellent stability and ride quality. With an overall height of 1,515mm and width of 1,760mm, it provides generous interior accommodation.

The interior is distinguished by innovative design that works to harmonise driver and passenger with the car. At the front the sculpted console forms a bridge that’s not just elegant, but is practical, too, raising the gear lever and other controls to the perfect ergonomic height.

LED Headlights Find Their Way to High-End Automobiles

While LED taillight technology has found its way into a wide range of sedans, wagons, sports cars and SUVs/crossovers, LED headlights are just now starting to find their way into the automotive sector. When used in taillights, LEDs provide better packaging efficiency, faster response times and longer life than traditional bulbs. More efficient packaging with LED technology also allows designers greater liberty in creating unique headlight designs for vehicles.

Toyota was the first to enter the LED headlight fray with the announcement that its Lexus LS 600h L luxury sedan would feature LED headlights. This is an addition to the vehicle’s hybrid powertrain, 30GB HDD navigation system, radar-based cruise control, Intuitive Park Assist and countless other features.

And just recently, VAG announced that its Audi R8 mid-engined sports coupe would also feature LED technology. The LEDs are used for all headlight functions including dipped beam, main beam, daytime running lights and turn signal indicators. Audi also uses LEDs for the taillights and to provide indirect light for the engine which can be seen under glass.

But for all the advantages of the technology, Visteon has demonstrated that LED technology does have its drawbacks when used in automotive applications. Heat buildup can be a problem as well as the close proximity of the LEDs to the engine compartment which presents even more heat-related challenges. Furthermore, LEDs require precise electronic control to function properly.

Despite the disadvantages – which are sure to be resolved in the coming years –LED lighting in automobiles is the future. Likely within the next few years, we’ll start to see the technology trickle down to more mainstream automobiles as new technology often does.

Audi Reveals World’s Most Powerful Diesel Passenger Car

A road-going Audi Q7 SUV with a Le Mans race-bred V12 TDI engine bristling with 1,000Nm of torque takes pole position this week as the world’s most powerful diesel passenger car. Benefiting from technology honed in the development of the V12 unit that powered the Audi R10 TDI to the first ever Le Mans victory for a diesel-powered sports prototype, the 6.0-litre, 500PS engine will be available in fully fledged series production Q7 models in the foreseeable future.

Currently undergoing pre-production testing, the extremely compact twelve-cylinder unit produces its mammoth 1,000Nm torque peak - 350Nm more than the acclaimed 4.2-litre V8 TDI powering the A8 - from just 1,750rpm, guaranteeing breathtaking pace right from the outset as the latest generation quattro four-wheel-drive system smoothly distributes the power four ways via a purpose-built, strengthened six-speed tiptronic transmission.

The immediacy of the power flow shows in a 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.5 seconds, and the incredible performance is tempered only by the electronic limiter’s cut-in at 155mph. Mercedes-AMG is unveiling the range-topping version of the new luxury coupe, the CL 63 AMG. Under the bonnet is an AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine that was developed independently and delivers a maximum output of 525 bhp and 465 lb-ft of peak torque for guaranteed scintillating performance.

A glance at the high-tech specification of this exceptional two-door coupe emphatically under-lines its exclusive status: in addition to the unmistakable AMG bodystyling and the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, the AMG high-performance braking system is also fitted as standard.

The CL 63 AMG represents the highlight of Mercedes-AMG’s 2006 model initiative so far, which has encompassed ten brand new high-performance AMG models to date.

Saab’s first-ever SUV is flying to new heights with the 2007 9-7X Altitude Edition. Only 500 of these specially-outfitted SUVs will be available for the 2007 model year, making it a limited edition with very exclusive appeal.

Beyond the extremely rich standard equipment of the 9-7X, the Altitude Edition includes 18″ alloy polished wheels, and side assist steps, a rear DVD player, and an exclusive carbon fiber gray metallic paint. The package will be offered at a savings of nearly $1,000 than if the items were ordered individually. Turn-by-Turn allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers’ vehicles through their OnStar system. Also in 2007, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System becomes standard equipment on the 9-7X, and one new color, Crystal Blue metallic, has been added.

The last of the first-generation X5 Sports Activity Vehicle was produced at BMW Manufacturing Co. in Upstate South Carolina, making way for the production of the next generation X5.

The Toledo Blue 3.0is X5 sports a Truffle Brown leather interior with a Dark Grain Poplar wood trim. Due to its significance to BMW, the factory will keep the vehicle and display it in the Zentrum museum as part of the BMW Mobile Tradition Collection.

The Audi TT clubsport quattro study reduces the TT Roadster to a pure driving machine. A powerful engine, state-of-the-art technology and numerous traits borrowed from the world of motorsport are the dominant features of the TT clubsport quattro. The goal that the development engineers set themselves for this vehicle study was to achieve purism at a premium level.

No hood, no A-post – instead, a wraparound windscreen kept extremely low which deliberately evokes images of a speedster. The flat, slightly tinted window strip surrounds the cockpit. The panoramic windscreen and the two humps located behind the interior in place of the hood compartment are reminiscent of a racing car. The rollover bars familiar from the TT Roadster are kept flatter and are the same height as the sports bucket seats.

The front end is dominated by the single-frame grille which has aluminium inserts to give its design a horizontal emphasis. This makes the TT clubsport quattro appear even flatter than it already is. The four rings of the logo are not located in the grille as on most Audi models, but on the bonnet.

The large air inlets in the front end supply additional air to the more potent TFSI engine. LED daytime running lights provide an eye-catching highlight at all times of day. The visible stainless steel rear silencer is the striking feature in the rear bumper, while the blade under the rear silencer visibly underscores the vehicle’s sports character. The dual-branch exhaust system with its oval tailpipes calls to mind the sporty Audi production models such as the RS 4.

There is a deliberate lack of visual interruptions in the side line and you will look in vain for door handles. The TT clubsport quattro is opened by remote control: the doors spring open at the press of a button. The size of the two exterior mirrors has also been minimised. 20-inch wheels with tyres of size 265/30 R20 emphasise the car’s muscular appearance, as does its track width which has been increased by a total of 80 millimetres compared with a production TT. Not only that, but the wheel arches have also been enlarged additionally.

The car is painted Daytona Grey, a colour that Audi used for the first time on the RS 4 and the S8. The exterior design features dark shades of grey. This forms a contrast with the metallic elements, with the grille and side grille in Gun Metal, a steely colour which imbues the TT clubsport quattro with a look which is both sporty and pure.

The brake callipers, the orange colour of which links the exterior design to the interior, provide a visual contrast. These bright colour highlights also provide attractive visual touches in the interior, on elements such as the instrument cowl, the armrest and on the back of the bucket seats. The black leather seat itself also boasts a special feature in the shape of a laser pattern worked into the seat. This was specially designed for the TT clubsport quattro and plays on the TT logo.

The sports character demonstrated by the exterior design is continued inside the car, where purism was also the driving element. Racing bucket seats are provided for both occupants. Together with four-point belts that are three inches wide, these offer both driver and passenger excellent support, even in extreme driving situations – on the racetrack, for example. The generous use of aluminium is characteristic of Audi. This starts with the steering wheel which is adorned with a twin spoke crafted from this lightweight metal. The pedals are also made of aluminium and exhibit a grooved structure. They consequently not only afford a better grip, but also help to save weight. Foot rests are provided for both driver and passenger in the TT clubsport quattro.

The gear lever gate adopted from the new mid-engined sports car, the Audi R8, and the aluminium gear knob are a joy to behold. This lightweight metal is also used for the door pull and the door opener, both of which are cut-out, a feature which further underlines the interior’s purist character.

The sill area has also been restyled compared with the production model. Rather than being interrupted by a sill strip, it now emphasises the width of the car. A new door sill trim located further inside the car, along with floor mats sporting the TT logo as an aluminium inlay provide further visual highlights. The surrounding strip on the top shoulder is also made of this lightweight metal.

The Audi designers came up with a special idea in the field of entertainment. Instead of the middle of the three round air vents in the upper part of the dashboard, they integrated an interface here, designed among other things for the B&O MP3 player BeoSound 2. The round player built by Audi’s premium partner fits exactly into the circular opening and is a sheer delight for the senses, both visually and acoustically.

The instrument cluster is very different from the one in a production model. The vertical needles and colour graphics are the eye-catching features. The clock and odometer have been omitted in keeping with the car’s underlying purist philosophy.

The racing character of the Audi TT clubsport quattro is underscored by its technology. The Audi engineers have packed the 2.0 TFSI engine with even more power than the 260 bhp familiar from the Audi S3. The turbocharged four-cylinder unit with petrol direct injection breaks the magic 300 bhp barrier. Thanks to a modified intake manifold, it has been possible to get even more power out of this highly efficient engine (which was “Engine of the Year” in its class in 2005 and 2006). Power is transferred to all four wheels, making the TT clubsport quattro the first new-generation TT with four-cylinder engine and quattro permanent four-wheel drive.

The transmission is also new in this performance category. Thanks to its dual clutch, the S tronic direct-shift gearbox changes gear virtually without interrupting the flow of power, a process that goes unnoticed by the driver. The six gears can, however, also be changed manually, with gearshifts taking just fractions of a second.

Anyone opening the bonnet will be met by a fascinating sight. Thanks to a lack of cables and auxiliaries, the engine compartment looks extremely clean. The engine has deliberately not been hidden under a cover. The cross brace running above the engine is a technical stroke of genius. It not only makes the car more rigid, but also contains the coolant expansion tank. The ABS system has been moved from the engine compartment to the interior.

The air conditioning and activated charcoal filter are not to be found in the engine compartment either. A racing air filter ensures that the engine takes in a sufficient amount of air. The exhaust system has been adapted to suit the car’s sporty performance: the specially tuned exhaust emits the genuine sound of motor racing.

Ceramic brakes are fitted in the TT for the first time. These are absolutely non-fading and enable countless sharp braking manoeuvres without any loss of stopping power. Once again, Audi has taken advantage of its superior wealth of experience: ceramic brakes are already offered for the RS 4, the A8 and S8, for example, and are enjoying increasing popularity with customers.

The Audi TT clubsport quattro is a purist driving machine that combines the performance of a sports car with a unique design language. It consequently remains a TT on the one hand, while at the same time demonstrating just what is possible with such a fascinating production vehicle. The possible small-series production of this model is being considered.

2007 Hamann Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

It looks like a Stealth-Bomber on four wheels. It is one of the most masculine looking sports cars as well as one of the fastest. Through its appearance the Lamborghini LP640 gives a clear impression it’s not just for show. German tuning company Hamann set out to sharpen the Italian steer’s horns through modifications for appearance, driving dynamics and sound to create a distinct difference between the Hamann and factory versions.

Maintenance of road contact is most essential when one is pushing a super sports car to the limit. To achieve greater downforce on the front and rear axle Hamann offers a front spoiler as well as a rear wing. Whoever prefers to show their affiliation to motor sports can order the parts in Carbon-Kevlar instead of the fiberglass version.

Hamann applies further aerodynamic components in the form of a two-part rear diffuser with additional air hoses for the extendable side air intakes, side sills as well as a two-part front wing and Carbon-pendants for the original side intakes in the sills in front of the rear wheels. Furthermore, a central running air box on the roof brings back memories of past Lamborghini Diablo GT-R days. Naturally, these parts are also available in Carbon-Kevlar or fiberglass.

The Hamann dual stainless sports rear silencer (2×120mm end pipes) emits a sound similar to that generated from race tracks announcing the arrival of the vehicle. A positive side effect is an even sportier rear look. Export customers can extend their exhaust system with a Hamann sport metallic catalytic converter.

For the individualization of vehicles within this high performance calibre, a choice of new wheel design is inherent. Hamann suggests its own creation “Edition Race”. This multipieced, forged light alloy metal wheel with black wheel spider, “Y” spoke design, Titan bolts and high polished rim flange utilized for Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 comes in the combination 8.5 x 20″ front and 13 x 20″ rear. As expected, Hamann also offers here a complete wheel set with typical tires sizes 235/30 ZR 20 (FA) und 325/25 ZR20 (RA).

Hamann prepares the cockpit of the Super-Lambo providing even more sports racing atmosphere. For this, the tuners from Laupheim, Germany offer an 8-part carbon-look interior set. The race car look is established through instrument cockpit bordure, the air bleed jet, the gear shifting panel as well as the cigarette ashtray console. Santana Set To Join The Army

This is the car that’s gunning for Land Rover’s mighty Defender. The famous Solihull off-roader has long been favoured by the British armed forces. But that could be about to change now that military bosses have given Santana’s range of off-roaders the green light, clearing the way for them to go head-to-head with rivals.

After undergoing a series of gruelling tests, the forces’ Specialist and Utility Vehicles team has, for the first time, added the Spanish line-up to its panel of suitable vehicles. That opens the door to large military contracts and, as a result, puts the utilitarian four-wheel-drive in direct competition with the British-born Defender.

Although Santana has yet to pick up any orders following the decision, the 2.8-litre oil-burner’s 3.5-tonne tow-ing capacity and one-tonne payload are sure to appeal to military chiefs.

The firm’s ‘Work4orce’ line-up also includes van and pick-up variants. Forces in Spain, France and the Czech Republic already use Santana vehicles.

According to distributor Fourtec UK, models in the range can be equipped as emergency vehicles and fitted with armour for battlefield roles.

2007 BMW X3

The headline-grabbing powerplant is a twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel with an output of 286hp and 580Nm of torque that has been developed from the engine used by the BMW 535d. Such power places the X3 3.0sd into the realm of sports car acceleration courtesy of a zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds and a 149mph top speed.

What sets the X3 3.0sd apart from previous X3s is that it comes equipped with the same twin-turbo technology that has already been showcased in the BMW 535d. By using two turbochargers, one smaller one larger, the X3 3.0sd offers high levels of low down pulling power as well as top end performance.

It can do this because the smaller turbo boosts at low revs for instant, smooth and swift acceleration, but as engine speed builds the larger turbocharger comes into play to continue the rapid progress.

The result is an engine that develops peak torque from just 1,750rpm through to 2,250rpm, but is capable of continuing to rev up to 4,400rpm – an unusually high limit for a diesel.

Mitsubishi Releases The i Limited In Japan

On Tuesday, Mitsubishi followed up the i (eye) Play with a second special edition of its nifty new kei car.

The i Limited comes in nine possible paint colors and features a grey interior with darker grey cloth seating surfaces. AM/FM/CD 4-speaker audio, air conditioning with a deodorizing filter, UV-reducing privacy glass, keyless entry, power windows, 15″ wheels with styled covers, and ABS are all included in the package.

The keyless entry system allows remote operation of the windows.

As with all i models, power comes from a 660cc MIVEC turbocharged 3-cylinder. Prices are 1,197,000 Yen (2WD) and 1,323,000 Yen (4WD).

2006 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

The engine of the new Murciélago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The increased bore and longer stroke have boosted the displacement of the classic 60° V-engine from 6.2 litres to 6.5 litres (6,496 cm3). Thus the already extraordinary 580 hp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 hp (471 kW) at 8,000 min-1. The 12-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 660 Nm at 6,000 min-1. Naturally, the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 complies with every European and North American law governing exhaust fumes.

This “evolutionary leap forward” has been possible thanks to a coherent review of every engine component: the cylinder head and the entire intake system (based on the tried and tested Lamborghini variable geometry system), have been completely reworked. The crankshaft, camshafts and exhaust system have also undergone innovation.

The increase in power naturally determines an increase in performance. The excellent performance of the Murciélago LP640 means it can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).

Lamborghini engineers have also concentrated on improving torque development. The “drivability” of the engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system.

More power and higher torque call for superior gearbox component performance. To meet these new demands, the new Murciélago LP640 features a modified six-ratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated “Thrust” (acceleration programme) mode.

The body of the Murciélago LP640 with its characteristic scissor doors is created from the prized union of sheet steel and honeycombed carbon fibre, glued and riveted together.

Driving, handling and stability at high speed are enhanced by new springs and stabilisers, as well as by a redesigned electronically controlled damper. The “antidive” and “anti-squat” features on the axles, which efficiently prevent so-called “brake diving” and “squatting”, have not been changed. The two springs on every rear wheel, the single spring on every front wheel and the damper are placed coaxially.

The seats in the cockpit have undergone the most radical changes; more spacious and equipped with redesigned head restraints, the seats now ensure better comfort. The leather upholstery features lozenge-shaped stitching called “Q-citura”. The same design is recaptured on the upholstery on the door panels, the panel between the seats and the engine compartment, and on the roof panel.

A new instrument panel has been developed with lights featuring a new graphic design, flanked by a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5” widescreen monitor and DVD, MP3 and WMA player. An optional navigation system is also available (standard in Japan).

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz has updated its E-Class midsize sedan for 2007, adding two new optional engines, styling changes, a PRE-SAFE system and an AMG performance variant. PRE-SAFE is arguably the most advanced collision-mitigation system on the market, and Mercedes claims that its optional Bluetec diesel engine is the cleanest available.

The V-6-powered E350 continues, and a new 5.5-liter V-8 changes the E500’s name to E550 for 2007. The diesel E320 CDI is now called the E320 Bluetec, to represent the engine’s new emission-control technology. The new E63 AMG replaces the E55 AMG.

Changes inside include a slightly different shift lever, a slightly different climate-control layout and a new steering wheel that does away with the rubbery touch-pad-style controls. Some previous options are standard for the first time: a moonroof, six-CD changer, Harman Kardon premium stereo and, in the wagon body style, a power liftgate.

Renault Launches New Clio Renault Sport

The European market is blessed with a host of hot hatchbacks, and this latest addition ratchets the competition up a notch. Renault’s new Clio Renault Sport is distinguished by “Formula 1-inspired” aerodynamics, notably front fender extractor vents and a first-in-class functional rear diffuser. The latter generates about 88 pounds of downforce at highway speeds, maxing out at more than 150 pounds at high speed.

Power comes from an uprated version of Renault’s 2-liter, 16 valve engine, redlined at over 7,500 rpm. The normally-aspirated powerplant produces 197 hp and about 159 foot pounds of torque. A close-ratio 6-speed gearbox is new for this year’s model, and in combination, the revamped drivetrain is good for the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 6.9 seconds.

Broader fenders are stretched over 215/45 tires running on 17-inch alloys. Brembo brakes on cross-drilled discs provide the stopping power.

New chassis upgrades include a 2-inch wider track front and rear, and a new-design “double axis” front strut suspension, which Renault claims is immune to the torque steer that plagues many high-performance MacPherson strut-type FWD cars. The new RS also gets a stiffer rear torsion beam suspension.

Aston Martin has shown pictures of the next Bond car, the DBS. Based on the DB9, the DBS is more muscular and sits menacingly on polished 20” wheels. Additional inlets on the sill, hood and bumper also connect the car with the DBR9 racing car, their depth more powerfully planting the car on the road. The exterior is painted in unique ‘Casino Ice’, with details including nickel-finished headlamps as previously executed on the Rapide concept in Detroit.

Inside, seats are trimmed with quilted suede and contrast stitching, the same material mixed with carbon-fibre on the steering wheel. Sitting 25mm lower than the DB9, the DBS also weighs 300kg less with power pushed to over 500PS. It will make its screen debut in the remake of Casino Royale in November.

Ahead of its official global unveiling on 4th March at the Geneva Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors now reveals further images of the Prototype-S – born from the same gene pool as the original 2005 Concept-Sportback.

Jet Fighter Aggression
The prototype remains close to its original inspiration, and closely previews the forthcoming Lancer Sportback.

At the front, it uses a variation of Lancer’s trademark “Jet Fighter” grille featuring a full matt black finish, mesh inserts and chrome surround. Other distinguishing features include a Lancer Evolution

X style bonnet, Prototype-S specific headlamps and 19” five-spoke alloy wheels.

At the rear, Prototype-S follows the same design theme explored with Concept-Sportback with a very fast lift gate finished by Sportback’s trademark colour-keyed roof spoiler. Its elongated rear combination lamps widen the stance of the car as they wrap around the rear wings.

It is back: 34 years after the world premiere of the first Scirocco at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is now presenting the Scirocco of the new era in the same venue. Now as before, the coupé embodies the fascinating strategy of putting a sports car on wheels that is fit for use every day of the year at absolutely affordable prices. That is precisely what the new Scirocco does: high-class technologies merge with low costs of ownership, dynamic driving characteristics merge with a high level of comfort, and a surprisingly spacious interior merges with an uncompromisingly sporty design.

Volkswagen Chief Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn: “In the Scirocco we will be bringing the kind of sports car into the showroom that people dream of. Yet it is a dream that an exceptionally large number of car drivers will be able to afford – despite all of the high-end technologies we have implemented.” The Scirocco will already be entering the market across Europe in late summer, and other countries will follow over the course of the next year.

Avant garde design of the Scirocco
A calling card of the ambitious global concept is the new sports car’s avant-garde design. The fact being that the lines of the Scirocco study presented in August 2006 have been transferred to the production car nearly unchanged. This includes the long wagon/coupé roof whose form here is unique, and which pays tribute to the C-pillar design of the first Scirocco, the car’s athletic side profile, its distinctive engine hood and the entire rear end with its extremely broad shoulder sections. Only the design of the radiator grille has been changed for a more stylish and timeless solution.

With a length of 4.26 meters, the Scirocco is on par with the Golf. However, it is built significantly lower to the ground (1.40 meter) and is nearly as wide as the Passat (1.81 meter). Four adults can be seated with plenty of space inside. Once they are all aboard, the Scirocco provides 292 liters of cargo capacity; when the two seatbacks of the rear individual sport seats are folded down, capacity increases to a considerable 755 liters. This contemporary Scirocco demonstrates unfettered everyday utility, and it can be clearly recommended as a sports car for every day of the year.

Avant-garde technology of the Scirocco
Providing for ample power on the Scirocco – which comes with ESP and sport chassis as standard equipment – are four TDI and TSI engines, all of them charged and therefore just
as torque-strong as they are economical and low in emissions. The three TSIs (gasoline direct-injection) output 90 kW / 122 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. The Scirocco’s common rail engine (TDI) develops a power of 103 kW / 140 PS.

Further high-tech elements of the Scirocco: a 7-speed DSG and an “adaptive chassis control system”. Meanwhile, a large panorama vent sunroof – extending from the A pillars to the B pillars – provides for plenty of light in the interior. At the press of a button the transparent panorama roof is raised up to 39 millimeters. When the sun is too intense, a sunshade may be moved into place. But that is seldom likely to be necessary, since the glass of the panorama vent roof reflects 99 percent of UV radiation, 97 percent of infrared radiation (heat) and 80 percent of visible light.

The new Scirocco is one of the most attractive sports cars in the world when it comes to pricing. Nonetheless, the standard equipment package is super. Always there, for example, are 17-inch alloy wheels, height adjustable driver and front passenger seats and steering wheel, leather parking brake grip, sport seats, split folding rear seats, power windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, speed-dependent power steering, and of course a sport chassis

Audi R8

The Audi R8 racing car has won five times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and finished first in an amazing 62 of 79 international endurance races. Audi's first super sports car for the street takes the R8 name, challenging the Ferrari F430 and others, although, at a price that's at least $70,000 less, it might be no contest.

The Audi R8 features an exotic aluminum space frame, and a mid-mounted compact V8 engine making 420 horsepower. The most stunning feature is the clear Lexan cover over the engine, with LED lighting to show it off. The R8's skin was designed for efficient aerodynamics, by the same team of engineers who designed the R8 racing car; an underbody diffuser creates downforce to keep the R8 on the ground at its top speed of 187 miles per hour. It will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Despite this performance capability, any little old lady could drive the R8 around on the street. It's that tame. She could probably even crawl in and out herself, and once she got in the cockpit, she would be comfortable. The R8 has every creature comfort of a luxury car, including excellent legroom, and many options, from a navigation system to a 12-speaker, 465-watt sound system. There's decent luggage space under the hood in front, and a lot of space behind the seats.

Two transmissions are offered, a six-speed manual and high-tech six-speed R-Tronic, which is a manual transmission with no clutch pedal, that can be shifted either with paddle shifters, a lever, or by automatic mode. This transmission works best when the car is being driven near its maximum; at casual speeds, it's inconsistent and jerky.

The brakes are race-worthy, and a bit sensitive at slow speeds. The shock absorbers adjust to the road conditions, and the ride can be set in two modes, Comfort and Sport; in either mode it's firm but never harsh. The cornering, with inherent ideal balance and quattro all-wheel drive, is in a class by itself.

What makes the R8 exceptional is that it does it all: incredible high performance without making any compromises for civility and comfort.

If Chrysler can ride out the current downturn, we will see a new version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (current model pictured) in the future. At one time, the Grand Cherokee was a big money-maker for Chrysler. The sport utility market may be shrinking, but Chrysler needs another home run with this Jeep.

Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger

Despite all the attention given to fuel economy, there is still a market for big cars like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger (image is of the current model). All that Chrysler will admit is that it's working on updates for these two rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Our best guess is that the company will de-emphasize the hemi V-8, tone down the styling and try its best to improve fuel efficiency without unduly sacrificing performance. Perhaps Chrysler will figure out a way to package these vehicles with the advanced two-mode hybrid system it briefly offered in its big SUVs (Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen) before closing the factory late last year.

General Motors' plug-in hybrid differs from today's hybrids in that drivers will be able to recharge the batteries with an electrical outlet instead of letting them recharge while the car runs on gasoline. Another difference: The Volt's gasoline motor does not power the drive wheels; instead, after the vehicle exceeds its 40-mile range on batteries only, the gasoline motor turns a generator to recharge the batteries that feed the electric drive. The lithium ion batteries for this vehicle still remain a challenge in cost and volume manufacturing, but GM is promising it can make first deliveries, in limited numbers, by November 2010.

The second-generation Cadillac CTS sedan is a formidable competitor against the best small sport sedans from Germany and Japan. General Motors is wisely expanding the CTS lineup with coupe and wagon versions. The wagon (pictured) comes first, this spring; the coupe will follow some time in 2010. The wagon will offer many of the same performance and luxury features as the CTS sedan, including rear wheel drive and available all wheel drive, as well as two versions of GM's 3.6 liter V-6, with 255 or 304 hp. Also on its way in the second half of this year is a brand new Cadillac SRX crossover, a mid-size luxury crossover on GM's new global SUV architecture, replacing the slow-selling original version. The standard engine in the SRX, a three-liter V-6; a turbocharged 2.8 liter V-6 is optional.
